How Substance Use Treatment Work

In my approach to treating substance use, I prioritize a holistic and collaborative approach that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction. I begin by  conducting a thorough assessment to understand the individual's history of substance use, patterns of use, triggers, and underlying factors contributing to addiction. Together, we set personalized goals for treatment based on their unique needs and preferences. Using Motivational Interviewing techniques, I work collaboratively with the individual to explore their ambivalence about change and help them uncover their intrinsic motivations for overcoming addiction.

I teach practical skills and coping strategies to manage cravings, cope with stress, and navigate triggers without resorting to substance use. This may include mindfulness techniques, stress management strategies, and assertiveness training. I help individuals explore and address underlying issues that may be contributing to their substance use, such as trauma, co-occurring mental health disorders, or relationship problems. I employ cognitive-behavioral techniques to challenge distorted thought patterns and beliefs associated with addiction and develop more adaptive coping strategies.

Together, we develop a relapse prevention plan to identify triggers, early warning signs of relapse, and coping strategies to prevent relapse and maintain sobriety in the long term. I provide ongoing support, encouragement, and accountability throughout the treatment process, empowering individuals to take ownership of their recovery journey. Overall, my treatment approach to substance use is client-centered, evidence-based, and tailored to meet the individual needs and goals of each person. Through collaboration, support, and skill-building, I strive to help individuals achieve and maintain sobriety, improve their overall well-being, and reclaim their lives from addiction.
